My bff Maureen, our dear friend Kristin (getting a doctorate in anthropology, and so we call her the Skrabatologist), her dog Lucy and her parents (not pictured) went for a hike-and-picnic on the Billy Goat Trail in Glen Echo, MD.  IT WAS A PERFECT DAY.  It couldn't have been more perfect.  We saw animals--snakes, salamanders, butterflies (not pictured), turtles (not pictured).

April 30, 2011 Welcome to Deanwood

April 30, 2011 Greetings from Deanwood
This AWESOME mural is on the side of a corner store on Sheriff Road and 44th St(ish) in Deanwood.  Deanwood is a neighborhood in the south east corner of the northeast quadrant in D.C. It's filled with super-cute little houses--single families, duplexes, some rows, some apartment buildings, all with great big front and back yards.  It's a working class / working poor hood, and the grass is well-kept, and the folks on their porches are lovely and the kids playing ball in the street are way cute.

This is my super-sad Christmas cactus cutting.  I am not allowed to water it until the soil is dry.  My instincts say WATER.

April 28, 2011 Tomato Watch 2

April 28, 2011 Tiny Thyme

I accidentally boiled the roots of some of my baby plants by pouring too-hot water on them.  The tomatoes and basil are doing okay, but the parsley and thyme didn't really recover.  So I've started a new tray of plants--tomatoes for my parents' victory garden, more thyme, parsley, some Spanish lavendar, and other deliciousnesses.  Of course, I wrote the plants on the side the cardboard egg carton I'm using to incubate them, and the names have since been leached away with the water.  So, it'll be a little be a surprise plant situation, but as this is Round 2, I at least recognize the thyme and the tomatoes, and I remembered they were on the ends.

My heirloom pear tomatoes are coming along nicely.  They should be ready to transplant to my windowfarm this weekend, when I intend to complete the construction windowfarm. The lemon basil on the right is coming along too, even though I boiled the roots by accident (oops).

April 26, 2011 Shaed School Tiger Meets Mr Obama

April 26, 2011 Shaed School, Precinct 74 Polling Place

I voted for the first time a a home-owner on Tuesday.  One of just 9.5% of registered voters to show up for the special election of our interim City Council Chair, I learned that Shaed Elementary School's mascot must be the Tiger, and they had these great murals inside the gym where we voted, with a story of the Tiger meeting all sorts of great people (see above, the President), and doing great things.

Board Politics

I'm not a very diplomatic person.  I think I'm probably too honest to deal with the intricacies of lying to folks just to get your way to be good at it.  Relatedly, I'm pretty blunt.  I try to say what I mean, and mean what I say, and I don't BS around too much.

And today it was pretty distressing to have confirmed that the president of my condominium board is a contemptible, ugly-spirited jerk.  A big rude meanie.

And, after I stomped around like a angry child for a while, and wrote a few emails I maybe shouldn't have, and then meditated and then talked to my bff for half an hour, I had to remind myself that moral superiority is its own reward.   I may have let this very disagreeable person ruin most of my day, but I will be the better person in the end by rising above and moving on.

I will also rock the living heck out of this condo board, and work to make this community better. Regardless of whether or not the president of the board feels it necessary to call people name or respond to emails more often than once every three weeks to four months.

April 23-24, 2011 - On My Fast

April 23, 2011 - Beer!
I gave up drinking alcohol and eating meat (except fish on Fridays*) this Lent.  I'm not religiously Catholic at all, but I went to a Catholic elementary school, and consider myself culturally Catholic.  I'm Irish Catholic (and Scotch and German and French) on my Mom's side, and German (and Irish and Austrian) Lutheran on my Dad's, but I lean more heavily on the Catholic connection.  Golden rule, dude with cool hair who hung out with prostitutes, turning wine into water.  I dig that.

Giving up drinking and meat for Lent was a great challenge.  I'm a huge beer fan (see the fancy beers the broke my fast), and also enjoy all things tequila and gin.  I'm less into wine, but I'll imbibe a glass or three when it's with a good meal, and I'm gaga for sangria.**  But, I wanted to make sure I could go 46 days without drinking.  And I did.

April 24, 2011 Burgers, Asparagus, Ramps (Dupont FreshFarm)
I'm also big into meat.  My folks are real meat-and-potatoes sorts.  Organic, free-range meat and market potatoes folks, but still.  Meat and carbs were my diet staples growing up.  My mom never recovered from her mom's poor vegetable prepration, and so never made me eat my greens.  The past few years have been a real vegetable epiphany for me--starting with caprese salads with vine-ripened market tomatoes, fresh basil and real Buffalo mozzarella.  And continuing on with zucchini, then mushrooms, spinach, celery. sprouts, avocado... the list goes on and on of green things I used to consider poisonous-to-human rabbit food and now adore.

But, I still eat a lot of meat, and I understand meat production is generally both bad for the planet and bad for the animals, and wanted to see if I could go 46 days without eating it.  And I did!  I discovered I like beans a lot more than I ever thought I would (white bean puree with lemon and garlic, where have you been my whole life?!), and it was eye-opening to see both the dearth of vegetarian options, and the expanse of vegetarian possibilities.

April 24, 2011 - Boy (Grillmaster), Beer, Burgers
I've come through this experiment learning that, if necessary, I could do without the eating flesh or drinking booze, though I chose not to.  But, I will be a lot more concision about the quality (and quantity) of both.  And, I will continue to challenge myself to eat more plants, more often, less processed.  And, of course, I'll continue to spend dozens of dollars on excellent brews.

For the record, I broke my fast with an organic lamb roast, with all of my family's fixins -- toasted pine nuts, fried pita triangles with fried garlic slices, mint jelly, rice, and spinach salad.  And Goose Island 312 Wheat Beer (not pictured) on the Saturday, just the day before Easter (my folks were leaving Easter morning for vacation).  I followed that up with burgers (fresh, organic ground from the Dupont Fresh Farm market) and beer the next day (see above).

April 24, 2011 Babe, Beer, Burgers
(*Sometimes Friday was Tuesday or Thursday... but I only ate fish once a week, so I just fudge a smidge).

(** Sangria:
1 Bottle Cheap Red Wine (pref Spanish or Portuguese, but really, whatever's on sale)
1 Bottle Italian Orange or Blood Orange or Lemon Soda
2-3 shots Liquor 43 (Spanish Vanilla Liquer)
Fruit (optional)
Mix in a pitcher, serve over ice. )

Bonus:
Missuma, in a Box

April 23, 2011 Succulent Wach

April 23, 2011 Succulent Watch
I'm finding the succulents both delightful, and a draw on my patience.  I definitely over watered my first Christmas Cactus (not pictured), because it seemed to be dying, and water was surely the answer.  It's a cactus, my partner reminded me.  It's been removed to the top of the microwave* so I ignore it more.  I took a larger cutting from my parents' Christmas cactus, and put in in a pot that drains (left), and have been instructed by the cactus plant food I bought to wait until the soil goes dry before watering.  The little jade is plugging along well (center, front), as is the generic cactus (center, rear).

I also bought an aloe, and in attempting to split it so my I could give my parents half, I killed one half.  This is the sad other half, in a pot that drains.  It may or may not survive.  Only time will tell!

*I don't really believe in using microwaves for cooking--I really consider mine a glorified butter warmer, and use it maybe once a week to soften butter before I spread it on toast. If at all possible, I prefer to reheat via oven or stovetop.
